Seeking Shelter

1/30/2018

We are seeking a more permanent location in Cody to work on our Saddle Up! project. The key requirements are:
  • Space for a full sized, 35 foot long school bus, to be parked inside and room for us to walk around.
  • Roll up door tall enough for the bus to get in, at least 12 feet height.
  • Concrete flooring; working in the dirt is kind of tough.
  • Heated; we want to work during the winter months but we aren't fans of frostbite.
  • Water; we are welding and painting and sawing which means we need to be able to wash things off now and then.
  • Power; we have access to a MIG welder but our work space needs to be able to handle that load. We are hoping for a space with 3 phase power.
  • Cheap; we are a non-profit and are largely funding this right now through our hourly jobs. However, we know that nothing comes for free so we're just hoping for a really good deal.
Know of anything that fits this description? Please let us know!

Join us for New Years Eve!

"Bling In The New Year" and dance the night away with the Yellowstone Burners at the historic Wapiti Lodge! This celebration brings creativity, entertainment, music, and community together in unique ways. This is primarily a fundraiser to support our first collaborative art project which we hope to debut during Cody's 4th of July parade. Join us for this special night of fun!
The Details
  • Kickin' dance music will be playing in our main room, featuring sets we've gathering from our favorite Burning Man DJs. If you're into dance music, this is the place to be! Our playlist will be heavy on deep and funky house.
  • If that's not your thing, head outside to get warm by the fire or climb on board our 35 foot long bus, designed to look like an old west lounge. Settle in and listen to our favorite new and classic country music; we may even have an impromptu singer and guitar player from time to time.
  • We believe that entertainment doesn't always have to be on a stage. Do you know how to juggle or hula hoop? Bring your gear and when you're feeling the music, start doing your thing! Maybe you know some card tricks or can do up close magic; sit at a table for a while and ask people if they want to see a trick. Are you a painter or sculptor? Bring your canvas or clay and let your creation to life throughout the evening. All art forms are welcome and everyone who comes is cordially invited to be part of the entertainment. It doesn't matter what tricks you have up your sleeve; if you think it will make other people smile, bring it!
  • We are a group that Leaves No Trace! Help us keep trash in its place throughout the night and take care of this venue so we can be invited back for more great events!
  • Snow, wind, rain, or shine...this celebration will be on, no matter what the Wyoming weather may be.

Pricing
  • This event is designed to build connections with the creative community and to serve as a fundraiser for our group's first project. Your entry fee is a donation; if you don't have the funds, contact us! We may still have some volunteer tasks open and we'd love for you to donate your time. Otherwise, choose your level of donation:
    • Children, ages 14 and under (with parent), $10
    • Primary Donor: $25
    • Key Benefactor: $35
    • Big Giver: $40
    • You also have the option at ticket purchase to donate a little bit more. We are deeply appreciative for every dollar!
    • Click this link to buy tickets.
** Children are welcome; this is a family friendly event. However, guests under 18 years old must come with a parent and you must be 21 to drink; we will check IDs. **
What to Wear
  • Bring out the bling and let your inner magic shine! Do you have a tux with tails that you never wear? How about that ball gown you only wore once? If you're not into things that formal, that's okay too. Maybe you have a onesie that looks like a fox; add some battery powered fairy lights or sequins and rock that onesie through the night. Consider yourself part of our creative decor and make others smile with your attire. If a t-shirt and jeans is more your thing, that's alright too. Everyone is welcome, come as you are!

Eats & Drinks
  • Your ticket includes heavy appetizers and snacks throughout the evening, as well as complimentary non-alcoholic drinks.
  • We'll have a cash bar with a variety of beer, wine, and liquor. PLEASE, do not drink and drive. We will hang out as long as it takes for everyone to be safe driving home or...rent a room for the night!

Lodging
  • Call Wapiti Lodge for prices and room information - (307) 587-2420; some of these rooms can sleep large groups so pool funds with your friends and stay on site. Look for updates about other nearby lodging options; limited trailer and RV parking may be available. Please ask us for more details; april@yellowstoneburners.org. Please don't risk driving at night with deer and drunkards potentially on the road!

Help us create Saddle Up!

We have just launched our fundraising campaign and now we need help from you! If you can contribute, please do! If you can't, please share our link. Crowdfunding is successful when lots of folks are able to contribute just a little. We are truly grateful for everyone who contributes and shares :).

See our Fundrazr here! fnd.us/81EqNf?ref=sh_b6dsZe

We are excited about Saddle Up! for a couple of really important reasons: First, this mobile art piece will be a hydration station for Black Rock City. Dehydration is a serious issue out there and it's no fun to run out of water when you're far from the city and having fun.

Second,  Saddle Up! will be a critical piece in our hometown of Cody, Wyoming for awareness of our group and for future fundraising. Once she's complete, we can "rent" her out in exchange for a donation to our group. We envision taking her to private events or public gatherings throughout the year.

Thank you for any way that you can help us reach our goal!

Announcing...Saddle Up!

We have been a bit vague about what we are working on but now we’re ready to reveal all that we’ve been noodling on for the past year. Todd and April have formed a non-profit art-focused group called the Yellowstone Burners and we are based in the Cody, Wyoming area. We are going to lead the creation of an art car, or Mutant Vehicle, which we call Saddle Up!

The base vehicle is a 35 foot long school bus. We will build a deck on top of the bus with support beams that will hold a canopy above that second level. The exterior decor will then be designed to look like a saddle resting on a wooden saddle rack. The interior of the bus itself will be transformed into a high dollar old west poker lounge and we’ll call that The Lounge. The upper deck will become a wild west gunslinger saloon called The Watering Hole.

More than just transportation, the Saddle Up! will provide some humor along with a valuable community service; The Watering Hole saloon will serve...water. We will have a 50 gallon container of potable water on board each day/night and we will serve electrolyte drinks, teas, and just good old plain water. We plan to lure people in from deep playa under the guise of a saloon and trick them into making sure they are well hydrated. Todd and April have both experienced issues with a lack of water far from the city, as have several of our friends, and dehydration is the number one health issue at Burning Man.

Our simultaneous goal is to build a thriving community of collaborative artists here in Park County. The town of Cody loves to have parades and our most popular one is during 4th of July. We hope to have Saddle Up! ready in time to debut in this parade, and then bring her to Burning Man the following month. This piece is designed to honor our new home and the deep history of horse and rider that has made this part of the country so unique. We are very excited to introduce collaborative unconventional art to our new hometown and bring some new folks along with us to also experience the playa.

Here’s where the project stands now:
  1. We have a bus! It is a 1989 GMC 6000 Carpenter model and we got it from a very lovely couple in Powell, WY who are 100% supportive of our project. They have been a joy to visit with over the past few weekends.
  2. We turned in our application to Burning Man in time for Tuesday’s deadline. Friday morning, we woke up to find we had already been approved! The Borg wants to see Saddle Up and we are eager to deliver :).
  3. We have a logo that was created by a local marketing group, Meridian Partners. They will continue to be our go-to place for signage and branding. We are grateful for their help so far!
  4. We have a budget! Todd pulled out his budgeting expertise and we came up with what we think is a solid goal to get her built, get her to the playa, keep her filled with with valuable water, and get her safely back home from Black Rock City.
  5. We are fine-tuning our fundraising plans. We have one local artist confirmed to make some beautiful handcrafted leather swag and we are ust waiting for confirmation from another local artist who works with metal. Please watch this space for fundraising details as we will need a lot of help in spreading the word.

This is the first project that Todd or April have worked on where they are also the leading artists. This is our original idea and we’re so incredibly excited to form a team here in Cody to build it, to amaze our local community members as they see Saddle Up! in the July 4th parade, and we can’t wait to arrive on playa to give people rides to see incredible pieces of art while staying well hydrated. Let us know how you’d like to help us make this happen <3.

Hi! I'm April and I'm the communications lead for the Yellowstone Burners. I first attended Burning Man in 2010 and have been back 8, mostly glorious, times. I moved from San Francisco/Oakland to Cody, Wyoming in October 2015 and helped to form the Yellowstone Burners.
